The Smith Center Announces January Events

Founded in 1956 by visionary director and teacher Robert Joffrey and celebrated choreographer Gerald Arpino, The Joffrey Ballet proudly reflects the diversity of America with its varied repertoire and remains one of the most revered and recognizable arts organizations in the U.S. and around the globe.   Now under the direction of Artistic Director Ashley C. Wheater and Executive Director Christopher Clinton Conway, The Joffrey Ballet presents “Le Sacre du Printemps” (The Rite of Spring) and other unique works, exclusively sponsored by the E.L. Wiegand Foundation, bringing a world-class dance experience to Las Vegas.

 

Audi Speaker Series Presents Ray Kurzweil “How to Create a Mind”

Sunday, Jan. 27 at 7:30 p.m.

Patrons will receive a complimentary copy of Kurzweil’s latest book, “How to Create a Mind, The Secrets of Human Though Reveled” with the purchase of a $59 ticket. Ray Kurzweil has been described as “the restless genius” by the Wall Street Journal and “the ultimate thinking machine” by Forbes.   A leading inventor of our time, he was the principal developer of the first CCD flat-bed scanner, the first omni-font optical character recognition, the first print-to-speech reading machine for the blind, the first text-to-speech synthesizer, the first music synthesizer capable of recreating the grand piano and other orchestral instruments, and the first commercially marketed large-vocabulary speech recognition. Kurzweil will discuss all this and his latest book, “How to Create a Mind, The Secret of Human Thought Revealed.” Open-captioning is scheduled for this event. Natalie Merchant has earned a distinguished place among America's most respected recording artists as a prolific songwriter with a compelling artistic vision and a unique and captivating performance style. Going Platinum as the lead singer of the band 10,000 Maniacs, she helped define college rock and create the first wave of alternative bands.  Now on her own, she has become a master of the folk song.  Coming to The Smith Center on her world symphonic tour and featuring songs from her latest album, “Leave Your Sleep,” Natalie Merchant has “never sounded quite so right” said The Boston Globe.

It’s rare when a performer can star on a classic television action series that’s become part of American pop-culture, win top-billing on Broadway marquees in award-winning hit musicals, record solo albums featuring country chart-makers and play the leading man in a hit situation comedy. That rare performer is Tom Wopat. Having performed in television shows such as “Dukes of Hazard,” and off-Broadway productions such as “Oklahoma” and “Guys and Dolls,” Wopat’s experiences have awarded him an expansive repertoire, which continues to wow audiences across the nation.

Cabaret Jazz

The internationally acclaimed Motown-style vocal quartet brings its award-winning show back to Cabaret Jazz for the third time since The Smith Center’s opening less than a year ago. Featuring classics from the Temps, Tops, Miracles, Stylistics and others, the performance will also include Spectrum’s infamous harmonies and deft choreography.

Sunday, Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Cabaret Jazz

Überschall is a band comprised of present and past members of Blue Man Group and other talented Las Vegas musicians. Joining for these performances will be legendary drummer Terry Bozzio. With four drum and percussion stations, two guitars and bass, Überschall will take the audience on a sonic journey that defies categorization.

 

Michael Cavanaugh – The Billy Joel Songbook

Friday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 26 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Cabaret Jazz

Michael Cavanaugh is the new voice of the American Rock ‘n’ Roll Songbook.  Cavanaugh is a charismatic performer, musician and actor, made famous for his piano/lead vocals in the Broadway Musical “Movin’ Out.” Cavanaugh was handpicked by Billy Joel to star in his title role and evokes a style rivaling the “Piano Man.” Cavanaugh appeared in the show for three years and more than 1,200 performances, receiving numerous accolades which culminated in 2003 with both Grammy® and Tony® Award nominations.

Located in downtown’s 61-acre urban development, Symphony Park, The Smith Center for the Performing Arts is a public/private partnership that is the new centerpiece of cultural life in Las Vegas, offering a blend of performances by resident companies, as well as first-run touring attractions. The five-acre cultural campus features three performance spaces, the 2,050-seat main performance area in Reynolds Hall and Boman Pavilion’s 258-seat Cabaret Jazz and 250-seat Troesh Studio Theater.  In addition it is home to a 1.7 acre park, which can be used for outdoor concerts.
